Six weeks before you move
Make an inventory of everything to be moved. Decide what
goes with you, what to sell , what to give away.
Contact moving companies for estimates
If your employer helps with moving expenses, confirm any arrangements
Get cartons and packing materials together NOW
Ask your realtor to get maps and area information about your new location
Four weeks before you move
Notify all friends, family, business contacts, etc of your new address. Fill out change of address at post office
Contact utility, Phone Company for turn off dates and refund info
Clean clothes to be moved
Move jewelry etc to a safety deposit box
to protect from loss during the move
Arrange for move of house plants, most
moving companies will not move them
Contact utility companies in new location
Have bank arrange for transfer of business
Make arrangements with children’s schools for record transfer
Two weeks before you move
Transfer checking and savings, move contents of safety deposit box
Establish new phone service
Pack any items that you won’t need in the next two weeks, pack a separate box of cleaning supplies
Dispose of all flammable liquids
Return/retrieve all borrowed items
Check with movers
Cancel newspapers, yard services etc.
On moving day
Plan to spend the whole day at the house, last minute decisions may need to be handled
Plan a sitter for the children, pets
Double check with movers as to new address, driving time etc.
Make a final check of the house
After arriving
For safety's sake, please have all locks changed. The entire neighborhood could have a copy.
Check pilot lights, smoke detectors, hot water heater etc.
Notify post office
Change driver’s license, car registration
Register to vote
